Urban mobility updates: transit issues in Buenos Aires and safety tech in Madrid
Urban mobility challenges are being addressed through different approaches in Buenos Aires and Madrid. In Buenos Aires, commuters face issues with “mysterious stops” in areas lacking Metrobus infrastructure. These are bus stops that are not signaled, do not appear on maps, or lack official signage, forcing passengers to rely on guesswork or local knowledge to find where to wait. This lack of information is described as a source of insecurity and unequal treatment for public transport users.
In Madrid, the Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT Madrid) is implementing the Exterior Anti-Runover System (EAS) on its buses. The technology uses sensors to detect potential risks, such as pedestrians attempting to cross the street directly in front of a bus. The system is designed to mitigate the dangers caused by the large blind spots inherent in bus dimensions, helping to prevent accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.
