Urban Nyman faces criticism over relationship boundaries on SVT series

Participants in the new XL-format season of the Swedish reality series ‘Gift vid första ögonkastet’ (Married at First Sight) are facing scrutiny following controversial comments regarding relationship boundaries.

Urban Nyman has drawn significant criticism after stating that he would not be comfortable with his partner having close male friends. Nyman defended his stance on ‘Nyhetsmorgon’, clarifying that while he is not forbidding certain actions, he personally requires that neither partner maintains private friendships with the opposite sex. This has resulted in approximately 70 complaints being filed with the Swedish Broadcasting Commission (Granskningsnämnden), with some viewers arguing that SVT has failed in its public service mandate.

Psychologist Anna Bennich, acting as a relationship expert on the show, described Nyman’s views as ‘deeply problematic,’ noting that recommending the prohibition of existing friendships is not advised. Bennich also noted that much of the expert work and long-form dialogue occurring behind the scenes in the house does not make it into the final broadcast.
