Urban park design lacks vital plant diversity for biodiversity

Scientific research suggests that the manicured lawns common in urban parks often mask an ecological void. While homogeneous green grass provides a sense of order and safety, it frequently lacks the plant diversity necessary to support local fauna and maintain ecosystem health.

A concept known as ‘dark diversity’ describes plant species that could potentially thrive in a specific environment based on local conditions but are currently absent due to factors like habitat fragmentation, soil compaction, or frequent mowing. A global study published in Nature found that median community completeness was only 25%, meaning only a quarter of potential species are actually present in studied plots.

Research from the University of Queensland, CSIRO, and RMIT University, published in BioScience, identifies a specific missing layer in urban design: intermediate-height native plants. Dr. Nicola Sockhill notes that there is a vital gap between high tree canopies and ground cover. Incorporating species between 1 and 10 meters could improve urban livability, support biodiversity, and create more sustainable, heat-moderating environments.
