Urban planning experts discuss the design of future cities
In a discussion regarding the planning of future cities, architect and urbanist Manuel Salgado and researcher Vítor Campos address the effectiveness of current urban design instruments in Portugal.
Salgado, who previously served as the Lisbon Municipal Councilor for Urbanism, notes that while instruments like Municipal Director Plans (PDM) and Detail Plans function to define fundamental urban structures—such as ecological corridors, green corridors, major infrastructure, and historical heritage preservation—they are not necessarily ideal for the creative process of designing cities. The conversation also explores critical urban challenges, including housing and climate change.
