Urban regeneration strategies focus on technology and social cohesion
Discussions regarding the future of European urban regeneration highlighted the risks of historical cities becoming ‘outdoor museums’ and the potential for technology to revitalize urban centers. At the ‘Metamorphosis: Shifting Paradigms in European Urban Regeneration’ event held at the Athens Concert Hall, Filippo Innocenti of ZHA Architects warned that cities must remain living organisms focused on production, housing, and work rather than just consumption. He suggested that artificial intelligence and new technologies could allow light industries, such as microtechnology, to return to urban cores, similar to models seen in Shenzhen.
In a separate focus on territorial development, the National Council of Engineers (CNI) held sessions in Potenza, Italy, centered on urban regeneration and its role in social cohesion. The initiative emphasized the importance of extending regeneration efforts to the country’s internal areas. Experts and institutional representatives discussed the need to view urban renewal not merely as construction projects, but as essential tools for strengthening the structural integrity and social fabric of both metropolitan and rural regions.
