Urban research examines housing sustainability and public safety

Recent academic research in South America is providing new insights into urban planning and its environmental and social impacts. In Resistencia, Argentina, researcher Luciana Prieto from the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste (UNNE) investigated the environmental costs of social housing expansion in the city's northern zone. The study quantifies the carbon footprint and thermal performance of state-built housing constructed on former wetlands and ecological reserves, aiming to provide recommendations for more sustainable future projects.

In Chile, a study published in Nature Cities and led by Pablo Navarrete-Hernández of the University of Chile examines how urban design affects public safety. Through an experiment involving over 2,000 participants, researchers found that the progressive introduction of well-maintained vegetation significantly increases perceived safety in public spaces. While the study highlights the benefits of green interventions, it notes that physical design alone may not fully address safety gaps experienced by women.
