Urban traffic and pedestrian safety issues in Adjamé and Beaulieu-sur-Mer
In Adjamé, Côte d'Ivoire, the median strip of Boulevard Nangui Abrogoua has been converted into an informal parking area for cars and motorcycles. This unauthorized use of the space, intended to facilitate traffic flow, has created difficulties for pedestrians and turned the boulevard into a makeshift station for unofficial taxis known as ‘woro-woro’. Additionally, the area faces challenges with waste management, as trash accumulates in various spots along the busy thoroughfare.
In Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France, municipal authorities and the Metropole have begun removing parking spaces located within five meters of pedestrian crossings. This initiative aims to comply with current legislation and improve road safety by increasing visibility between drivers and pedestrians. The measure is specifically designed to protect vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and people with reduced mobility, by preventing parked vehicles from obstructing the view of those attempting to cross the street.
