Urban transit developments expand across Europe

European urban transit systems are undergoing significant technological and infrastructural shifts. In Gothenburg, extensive tramway developments have occurred over the last 25 years, with new lines and vehicles being introduced to accommodate city growth. Similarly, Tampere is expanding its tram network, which has been noted for adhering to schedules and budgets.

Technological advancements include Škoda’s demonstration of smart trams in Tampere, which can perform autonomous tasks in depots and assist in collision avoidance. In Prague, battery trolleybuses are being introduced to replace diesel buses on heavy lines, utilizing a mix of contact lines and battery power.

In Helsinki, new tram crossings have been implemented where pedestrians are required to yield to trams. These crossings use white tram markings instead of traditional zebra stripes. However, confusion has arisen in areas where buses also share these tracks, leading to safety concerns from police regarding pedestrian awareness, particularly for children.
