Urban transit developments in Belgrade and Sofia

Urban transportation developments are progressing in Belgrade and Sofia, highlighting different stages of transit infrastructure.

In Belgrade, the city continues to rely heavily on buses as its primary mode of transport while awaiting the construction of a metro system. Long-distance bus lines, specifically the 73 and 95, have become essential icons for commuters, connecting suburban settlements like Batajnica and Borča to the city center. These lines serve as vital links due to the current lack of rapid rail alternatives.

In Sofia, Mayor Vasil Terziev inaugurated a new three-kilometer section of the metro system on General Vladimir Vazov Boulevard. The expansion includes three new stations: ‘Stadium Georgi Asparuhov’, ‘Besarabia’, and ‘General Vladimir Vazov’. This extension of Line 3 is expected to provide faster travel for approximately 45,000 daily passengers and could reduce local car traffic by up to 25%. The project, which took four years to complete, involved significant engineering challenges due to high groundwater levels and weak soil conditions.
