Urban Tree Canopy Cuts Heat Island Temperatures by Up to Half

Two recent studies find that increasing tree cover in cities can offset as much as 50% of the urban heat‑island effect. Residents of heavily treed neighborhoods experience 20%‑40% less excess heat compared with those in areas with little or no canopy.

The benefit is uneven: low‑income districts typically have far fewer trees, exposing residents to higher temperatures. Species matter too; large‑crowned trees provide the most shade, while drought‑adapted species transpire less and cool less effectively. Even if all possible urban space were tree‑covered, researchers say it would only counter roughly 20% of the temperature rise driven by climate change, meaning additional measures such as cool roofs, green infrastructure and energy‑efficient buildings are still required.
