In New Zealand, recent analysis shows substantial declines in urban greenery: Auckland lost 30 % of its green space (about 12,879 trees) between 1980 and 2016, Hamilton lost 20 % of its green area, and Christchurch’s canopy fell by roughly 15 % from 2016 to 2021. City plans aim to raise canopy cover to 30‑40 % (Auckland currently 18 %, Hamilton 15 %, Christchurch 23 %).
