Urban vitality disparities widening across Japanese cities

A growing disparity in urban vitality is emerging across Japan, as core cities experience different trajectories compared to their surrounding suburbs and other regional hubs. While some prefectures face overall population decline, certain central cities are maintaining or even increasing their vibrancy through urban redevelopment and the construction of high-rise residential buildings near transit hubs.

This movement is driven by elderly residents moving from suburbs to urban centers due to declining public transport, as well as young couples relocating from rural areas. While this aligns with the 'compact city' concept, many suburban municipalities continue to struggle with rapid population loss due to limited jobs and transportation.

Success stories include cities like Utsunomiya, which has attracted private investment through light rail integration, as well as Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Sapporo, and Matsuyama, which have leveraged tourism and industrial clusters. Conversely, cities that fail to implement effective compact city models or attract inbound tourism face a downward spiral of population loss and the withdrawal of essential commercial facilities.
