Urbanización 21 de Abril residents self-fund park lighting

Residents of the 21 de Abril urbanization in Chimbote have independently funded and installed lighting in the Parque de la Paz y la Amistad. The initiative, led by community members including the Grupo Paz, involved the installation of twelve light poles to improve safety and allow for nighttime use of the previously abandoned space.

Community leaders, including Jorge Reyes, Luis Malpica, and Wilson Pereda, noted that the project was a collective effort driven by a lack of local government intervention. In addition to the lighting, neighbors have engaged in beautification efforts, such as installing ornaments and creating murals, to reclaim the public area.
