Urethral stricture impacts patient quality of life

Urethral stricture is a condition where the passage for urine from the bladder is narrowed due to the formation of scar tissue. According to reconstructive genitourinary urologist Yiraldy Merán of Cedimat, the condition is often underdiagnosed because its symptoms frequently overlap with other urinary tract issues.

Common causes include direct trauma to the urethra—such as traffic accidents, which are a primary cause in the Dominican Republic—as well as endoscopic urological procedures and radiotherapy. While more frequent in men, the condition can also affect women.

Symptoms include a weakened urine stream, difficulty initiating urination, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, increased urinary frequency, and nocturia. If left untreated, it can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections or acute urinary retention, which is a medical emergency. Beyond physical symptoms, the condition can significantly impact a patient's quality of life, affecting mental health, work productivity, personal relationships, and sexual or reproductive function.
