Urinary health: Recognizing incontinence and the risks of delaying urination

Urinary incontinence is not a standalone disease but a symptom of various underlying health issues, including pregnancy, menopause, prostate problems, diabetes, obesity, or neurological conditions. Common early signs include involuntary leakage during physical activities like coughing or sneezing, sudden and intense urges to urinate, and increased frequency of urination during the day or night.

Regarding bladder habits, while occasional delay in urination may not be problematic, regular postponement can lead to complications. Urologist Sonia Bahlani notes that while holding urine does not directly cause infection, leaving urine in the bladder for extended periods allows bacteria more time to multiply and adhere to the bladder wall. This can disrupt the coordination between the bladder and pelvic floor muscles, potentially leading to residual urine. High-risk groups include individuals with diabetes, kidney stones, or neurological disorders, as well as pregnant women and postmenopausal women. Warning signs requiring medical attention include fever, back pain, or persistent difficulty during urination.
