Urinary tract irritation and causes of dysuria

Burning during urination, medically known as dysuria, is a symptom indicating irritation or inflammation in the urinary tract. This discomfort occurs when the natural acidity of urine contacts sensitive or damaged walls in the bladder or urethra.

According to the Sociedade Brasileira de Nefrologia (SBN), urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common causes. Potential causes include cystitis, candidiasis, prostatitis, and kidney stones. The timing of the pain can assist in diagnosis: burning at the start of urination often suggests urethral irritation, while pain at the end may indicate bladder issues.

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to serious complications, such as the infection spreading to the kidneys, which may cause high fever and intense back pain. While doctors may suggest temporary urinary antiseptics to manage discomfort during the diagnostic process, early medical consultation is essential to prevent the condition from worsening.
