Urška Žigart crash injures Tadej Pogacar's partner, prompting cycling safety reforms

Slovene cyclist Urška Žigart suffered a serious crash in the second stage of the women's race around Switzerland, losing control on a steep braking zone in the final kilometre. She sustained a broken jaw and a mild concussion and was taken to hospital, while her fall caused a pile‑up that took down several other riders.

Her partner, four‑time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, expressed anger at the hazardous conditions, confronting a cameraman on the road. He later confirmed Žigart was in good spirits and motivated him to keep racing. The incident spurred the CPA Women cyclists' union to demand a thorough review of UCI safety protocols, calling for stronger measures to protect riders.

Pogacar, who later secured his first career victory in the same Swiss race, said the accident reinforced his resolve and highlighted the need for change in the sport’s safety model.
