Urologist explains differences between BPH and prostate cancer

Urologist Dr. Khaled Ahmed Taha Neto has detailed the distinctions between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer, noting that while both affect the same gland, they differ in origin, symptoms, and diagnostic methods.

BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate associated with aging and hormonal changes. It often presents early symptoms such as dysuria, frequency, nocturia, or obstructive issues like a weak urinary stream. In contrast, prostate cancer frequently presents no symptoms in its early stages and requires screening for detection. Advanced cancer may lead to urinary bleeding, obstruction, or renal failure.

Diagnosis for BPH typically involves physical exams and imaging, such as ultrasound or resonance, while advanced prostate cancer requires specific screening to identify malignancy.
