Urologist warns that delaying urination can damage kidneys
Urology specialist Prof. Dr. Bülent Altay has warned that the habit of delaying urination can lead to long-term health complications, including impaired bladder function and kidney damage.
According to Altay, chronic urinary retention can cause the bladder to adapt to holding high volumes of urine. This can result in a 'lazy bladder' that is unable to empty completely. Over many years, the presence of significant residual urine can negatively impact kidney functions.
Altay suggests that the ideal time to empty the bladder is when the initial urge is felt, typically between 150 to 300 milliliters. He noted that while frequency varies by individual, a healthy range is generally 6 to 8 times per day.
