Urologists warn of health risks from regular urinary retention

Urologists are warning against the habit of regularly delaying urination, noting that frequent suppression of the urge to go can lead to serious health complications. Australian urologist Sandra Elmer highlighted that ignoring bodily signals can damage the bladder's muscular structure, potentially leading to permanent loss of function.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has noted that regular urinary retention can weaken bladder muscles and increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). In severe cases, this can result in urinary retention, where the bladder cannot be fully emptied.

A 2022 study published in BMC Infectious Diseases involving 816 women living in university dormitories found a correlation between delaying urination and a higher incidence of UTIs. Common reasons cited for delaying bathroom visits included inadequate public facilities, long travel times, and the unavailability of hygienic amenities.
