URPL experts reject over-the-counter status for sumatriptan

Experts from the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products (URPL) in Poland have unanimously rejected a request to reclassify the migraine medication sumatriptan from a prescription-only (Rx) drug to an over-the-counter (OTC) product.

During a May 2026 meeting of the Medicinal Products Commission, experts cited several safety concerns regarding the transition. These included the risk of medication-overuse headaches, serotonin syndrome, and the potential for patients to use the drug without a prior cardiovascular diagnosis.

While the official resolution anonymized the specific drug, pharmacological and clinical data analysis identifies the substance as sumatriptan. The drug is currently available in Poland in tablet, subcutaneous injection, and nasal spray forms. The commission noted that while another triptan is already available OTC in Poland, sumatriptan possesses a different safety profile and lower oral bioavailability.
