Ursula von der Leyen supports Zelenskyy's call for ceasefire

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed full support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call for a ceasefire. This proposed ceasefire aims to protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in both Ukraine and Russia.

Following a telephone conversation with Zelenskyy, von der Leyen noted that the war has entered a “new, grimmer phase,” citing Russian strikes on civilians far behind the front lines. She emphasized that the European Union remains committed to Ukraine's defense and freedom.

In preparation for the upcoming European Council, von der Leyen announced that the EU will provide additional funding this week for drones and missiles to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses. Furthermore, the EU is expected to open two additional clusters of negotiation chapters as part of Ukraine's accession process.

French President Emmanuel Macron also voiced unconditional support for the call for an energy ceasefire, noting that Russia continues to escalate attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
