Ursula von der Leyen outlines path for European strategic sovereignty

In her 2026 State of the Union address to the European Parliament, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the pursuit of strategic sovereignty and a more independent Europe. A central focus of her speech was economic competitiveness and addressing the growing trade imbalance with China.

Data from Eurostat indicates that the EU's trade deficit with China reached 359.8 billion euros in 2025, an 18% increase from the previous year. This follows EU imports of 559.4 billion euros from China against exports of 199.6 billion euros.

To bolster the single market, a political agreement has been reached on the ‘One Europe, One Market’ roadmap, with a goal to complete the overhaul by the end of 2027. Additionally, proposed omnibus packages aim to reduce administrative burdens on businesses by roughly 17 billion euros annually, alongside efforts to accelerate permitting processes and strategic European projects.
