Ursula von der Leyen skips FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declined the invitation to attend the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New Jersey, citing a packed schedule of official duties. The decision was confirmed by the commission’s spokesperson Paula Pinho.

The final, set for Sunday at MetLife Stadium, is expected to host several world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and King Felipe VI. Von der Leyen’s absence also means no informal meeting with Trump will take place. Argentine President Javier Milei is likewise not travelling to the match.

Earlier, von der Leyen posted on social media, “Whoever wins tonight, a strong European team will play in the final!” after Spain’s 2‑0 semi‑final victory over France. In the days preceding the final she visited Kyiv, attended France’s Bastille Day celebrations, and is slated to meet officials in Brussels.
