Ursula von der Leyen to visit Greenland for EU Arctic cooperation

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Greenland on August 30-31 to sign a joint declaration between the European Union and the Arctic territory. The visit, which was previously delayed due to Danish political developments, aims to strengthen Arctic security and cooperation.

During the trip, von der Leyen is scheduled to meet with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Faroese Prime Minister Beinir Johannesen. The European Commission has proposed doubling EU funding for Greenland to 530 million euros over seven years starting in 2028, alongside a planned investment package for Nuuk exceeding 150 million euros.

The diplomatic mission occurs amid heightened geopolitical interest in the region involving the United States and Russia. The visit follows previous tensions regarding American interest in Greenlandic territory and past discussions concerning tariffs related to Arctic military exercises.
