Ursula von der Leyen to tour Western Balkans for EU integration talks
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is conducting a tour of the Western Balkans to discuss EU integration and the EU Growth Plan. The tour, which begins September 30 in Albania, includes visits to Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are excluded from this itinerary due to upcoming elections.
In Montenegro, officials expect von der Leyen to offer support for the country's progress, noting that Montenegro has already submitted positions for approximately ten EU negotiation chapters. Discussions are also expected to touch upon political unity and economic development tools like the removal of roaming charges. Meanwhile, in North Macedonia, Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski emphasized the need for a solution to the dispute with Bulgaria to ensure predictability in the EU accession process, stating that current conditions do not allow for constitutional changes.
In Kosovo, von der Leyen is scheduled to meet with President Albulena Haxhiu and Prime Minister Albin Kurti to focus on gradual integration and regional economic growth.
