European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a conference call on the Ceuta migrant crisis, praising the joint effort of Spain and Morocco that saw most of the irregular arrivals returned. Twenty‑two EU states, led by Italy and Denmark, signed a letter supporting the measures, while France and Portugal did not. Italy and Denmark have called for suspending Spain from the Schengen area. The European Parliament’s Socialists & Democrats group also sent a letter to von der Leyen asking her to clarify the legal basis for any Schengen suspension.

The crisis involved roughly 50,000 migrants entering the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, with about 7,000 remaining after the mass return. The episode has heightened tensions among EU members over migration policy and border security.
