Ursus tractors and the history of Polish agricultural mechanization
Historical data highlights the significant role of Ursus tractors in the mechanization of the Polish countryside. The Ursus C-360, produced between 1976 and 1994, saw nearly 300,000 units manufactured. In 1979, a new C-360 in basic configuration cost approximately 200,000 PLN, which was equivalent to about 57 tons of wheat, though formal acquisition presented challenges beyond mere financial capability.
During the late 1990s, Polish farmers faced a transition toward Western agricultural technology. While interest in new machinery grew, financing remained a major obstacle. Models such as the Ursus 1614 and 1634 cost around 160,000 PLN, often requiring large farms of 300 hectares to take out loans for a single tractor. This era marked the beginning of a rapid mechanization race that has since transformed the sector, with modern Polish farms of 100 to 300 hectares now considered among the strongest in Europe.
