Uruapan Mayor faces scrutiny over dismissal of 109 police officers

Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and political aspirant Gladyz Butanda Macías have criticized Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz following the dismissal of 109 municipal police officers.

Governor Ramírez Bedolla stated that the dismissals were the decision of the mayor, calling her claims that the State Executive Secretariat of the Public Security System (SESESP) ordered the removals “false.” He clarified that the state government lacks the authority to intervene in municipal labor matters and noted that the officers failed to complete required trust and permanence controls because the municipal authorities did not facilitate the procedures.

SESESP official César Erwin Sánchez corroborated this, emphasizing that each municipality is responsible for hiring, administering, and managing its own police personnel.

Gladyz Butanda Macías has called for a formal audit of the Uruapan City Council's accounts to clarify how public resources are being managed. She argued that the administration's decision to reduce security forces is inconsistent with previous goals to strengthen local safety and expressed concern for the families affected by the job losses.
