Uruapan Mayor faces scrutiny amid homicide investigation and staff dismissal claims
Political and legal tensions are escalating in Uruapan, Michoacán, following the homicide of former mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez. Yesenia Méndez Rodríguez, the former private secretary to Manzo, has denounced her verbal dismissal from the City Council as a direct retaliation for her recent testimony before the State Attorney General's Office (FGE).
Méndez Rodríguez requested that authorities investigate the personal and professional relationship between the current mayor, Grecia Quiroz García, and Samuel García Rivero, a former municipal official. García Rivero is currently being processed for his alleged involvement in the homicide of Manzo, with accusations that he leaked the mayor's movements to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Local political figures and the President of the Local Congress, Baltazar Gaona García, have called for a thorough investigation into Quiroz, citing concerns regarding the potential withholding or manipulation of Manzo's mobile phones. Meanwhile, Mayor Quiroz has announced changes to the municipal police force, stating that several officers will be removed for failing mandatory control and trust examinations.
