Uruapan renovates Plaza de La Ranita to promote Michoacán culture

The Plaza de La Ranita in Uruapan, Michoacán, has undergone a significant renovation to serve as a hub for tourism and the promotion of regional traditions. Supported by a state investment of 19.8 million pesos, the site now features a monumental mural titled ‘Uruapan, heritage and roots that live,’ created by artist Carlos Campos. The artwork depicts local identity through imagery of artisans, traditional dances, and the Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park.

The plaza also hosts a Casa de las Artesanías (Casart) boutique, which provides visibility for local creators of textiles, woodwork, and pottery. In conjunction with these cultural enhancements, Casart recently held an awards ceremony at the La Ranita cultural center to recognize excellence in traditional crafts. The competition awarded 24 prizes and three special honors for categories including maque incrustado (inlaid lacquerware) and various styles of embroidered cotton textiles.
