Uruguay achieves energy independence through renewable transition

Uruguay has transformed its energy sector from a state of crisis in 2008 to a leader in renewable energy. Following a period of high prices and power outages caused by drought, the nation implemented a comprehensive plan to achieve energy independence.

The current electricity matrix is composed of 50 percent hydropower, 30 percent wind energy, 15 percent biomass, and 3 percent solar power. Fossil fuels now account for only approximately two percent of the country's electricity generation. This transition was driven by a decade of strategic planning, including new regulations and tax incentives that mobilized roughly seven billion US dollars in investment.

Key figures in this shift include physicist and former National Energy Director Ramón Mendez, who helped initiate the systemic changes, and Fernando Schaich, an operator whose company, SEG Ingeniería, manages 75 wind turbines. The transition has also had significant economic impacts, contributing to the creation of approximately 50,000 new jobs through the involvement of technical sectors, universities, and the agricultural industry.
