Uruguay agrees on national regulations for electric scooters
The Congress of Intendants of Uruguay has reached an agreement to establish national regulations for electric scooters to standardize rules across different departments. The new measures aim to improve safety for both users and pedestrians following increased usage in cities like Montevideo.
Key provisions include a maximum speed limit of 25 km/h and a restriction allowing only one person per vehicle. Users will be required to wear helmets and reflective vests, and vehicles must be equipped with lights for visibility.
Regarding age and licensing, the regulations allow individuals aged 14 and older to operate these vehicles, though minors under 18 will require parental authorization. No driver's license will be required. To facilitate enforcement, a unified registry will be implemented through the Single Vehicle Income Collection System (Sucive), where each scooter will be identified by a TAG. This system will allow inspectors to conduct roadside checks without imposing the full tax or licensing burdens associated with motorized vehicles.
