Uruguay and Argentina Expand Elder Care Policies

In Uruguay, the Interdepartmental Commission on Older Persons met on 12 June in La Paloma, Rocha, bringing together representatives from Canelones, Durazno, Florida, Maldonado, Paysandú and Rocha. The session highlighted the growing public‑policy focus on aging as 16% of the population is now 65 or older, and addressed coordination of services, shortages of essential supplies such as diapers and meals, abuse prevention, and the development of a new protocol for older‑person gatherings.

In Argentina’s Chubut province, officials marked the World Day for Awareness of Elder Abuse with a reflective forum organized by the Ministry of Human Development. Minister Florencia Papaiani and other senior officials stressed the need to protect the rights of seniors, promote respectful treatment, and strengthen community networks to prevent violence, discrimination and abandonment.

Both events signal a regional shift toward strengthening public support and legal protections for older citizens.
