Uruguay and Spain advance clinical data interoperability initiatives
Uruguay and Spain are implementing new strategies to improve the exchange of clinical data through digital innovation and international standards.
In Uruguay, the Agency for Electronic Government and the Information Society and Knowledge (Agesic) presented a roadmap to evolve the National Electronic Health Record (HCEN). The plan incorporates the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) international standard to allow different health systems to communicate more efficiently. This initiative aims to facilitate the exchange of specific data, such as allergies, medications, and diagnoses, through a proof of concept involving both public and private sectors.
In Spain, the Hospital General de Granollers was recognized at the Innova C17 Awards for its OpenEHRCat project. Led by Robert Garcia Rodrigo, the project uses artificial intelligence and the OpenEHR open standard to address difficulties in sharing clinical information between incompatible computer systems. The initiative includes developing an AI agent to adapt clinical data to standardized models and an assistant that allows users to query clinical information using natural language.
