Uruguay Army investigation launched after three soldiers die in river accident

An investigation is underway following a training accident in the Uruguay River that resulted in the deaths of three soldiers. The incident occurred during a night swimming exercise for a tactical diver course near Fray Bentos, in the Río Negro department.

During the exercise, which involved 20 military personnel swimming in groups of ten attached to a safety rope, four divers reportedly submerged abruptly. To prevent others from being dragged underwater, the safety rope was cut. The accident claimed the lives of Alférez Matías Vasella, Cabo de Primera Carlos Leandro Gómez, and Cabo Juan Rocha.

Lieutenant Braian Ruiz, who was rescued and resuscitated during the incident, is reported to be in stable condition. Medical authorities at the Military Hospital in Montevideo indicate he has been removed from mechanical respiratory assistance and is expected to be moved to intermediate care.

Army Commander-in-Chief Mario Stevenazzi has ordered an urgent investigation led by a general to determine the cause of the accident and evaluate whether safety measures were sufficient. While Stevenazzi stated there is no initial evidence of negligence, the investigation team has 48 hours to present preliminary findings.
