Uruguay marks 201 years of independence and seeks political dialogue

Uruguay celebrated the 201st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with official ceremonies across the country, most notably in Florida. President Yamandú Orsi led the central acts at Piedra Alta, accompanied by Florida Intendant Carlos Enciso and Minister of Transport Lucía Etcheverry. The commemorations included floral offerings, historical walks, and speeches reflecting on the meaning of national sovereignty and democratic coexistence.

In a separate political development, President Orsi announced a call for dialogue with leaders of major political parties to discuss Uruguay’s international positioning. This initiative, intended to precede his participation in the United Nations General Assembly in September, was postponed at the request of the National Party. While the meeting aims to unify perspectives on a complex international landscape, it has faced criticism from opposition sectors regarding the timing and political motivations behind the invitation.
