Uruguay commemorates Journalist and Media Worker Day

Uruguay celebrates Journalist and Media Worker Day on October 23, a date rooted in the country's early history of press freedom. The commemoration traces back to October 23, 1815, when José Artigas sent an official letter to the Cabildo of Montevideo supporting Mateo Vidal’s journalistic initiative, Prospecto Oriental. Artigas viewed such publications as fundamental tools for the circulation of ideas and the instruction of citizens.

The modern observance was officially established through legislation, beginning with Law No. 16.154 in 1990, which designated the date as a non-working holiday for press workers. This was later expanded by Law No. 19.715 to include all media workers. The day serves as a recognition of the essential role journalism plays in a democratic society, emphasizing the importance of verification, plurality of voices, and the responsibility to provide truthful information amidst modern challenges like disinformation.
