Uruguay Communist Party denounces U.S. actions against Cuba
During a central event held by the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) to commemorate the centenary of Fidel Castro's birth, PCU Secretary General Óscar Andrade denounced the current political situation in Cuba. Andrade characterized the actions of the United States against the island as a genocidal stage of imperialism, citing a history of interference and the ongoing blockade that he claims prevents essential medical treatments and surgeries.
Andrade referenced research from Boston University indicating 249 U.S. interventions globally since the end of the Cold War. He also highlighted Castro's historical support for various decolonization and sovereignty movements.
The event included a tribute to the Cuban medical brigade operating in Montevideo, which has performed over 122,000 surgeries at the José Martí Eye Hospital despite reported pressures from Washington to end its mission.
