Uruguay construction sector signs historic five-year labor agreement
Uruguay's Ministry of Labor and Social Security has signed a five-year collective bargaining agreement for the construction sector. The deal, described by Minister Juan Castillo as having “historical dimensions,” follows more than 100 days of negotiations and nationwide worker mobilizations.
A central component of the agreement is the gradual reduction of the workweek from 44 to 40 hours without loss of salary. This transition will occur in stages, with the full 40-hour week scheduled to take effect by January 28, 2030.
In addition to the reduced hours, the agreement includes wage increases, enhanced occupational health and safety measures, and the establishment of a commission to discuss retirement computations. It also grants greater powers to union safety delegates and provides for the creation of a new childcare center in the Maldonado department. The agreement was ratified unanimously by the construction workers' union, SUNCA, during a general assembly.
