Uruguay declares national mourning for three fallen military personnel
Uruguay has declared a 48-hour period of national mourning on November 3 and 4 following the deaths of three military members. The decree, signed by President Yamandú Orsi and Defense Minister Sandra Lazo, mandates that the national flag fly at half-mast on public buildings, barracks, air bases, and warships.
The fatalities occurred during a night swimming exercise for the Tactical Divers Course in the waters of the Uruguay River near Fray Bentos. The deceased have been identified as Ensign Matías Vasella and Corporals Carlos Leandro Gómez and Juan Rocha.
In response to the tragedy, local authorities have also taken action. The Intendencia of Río Negro declared departmental mourning and will promote a symbolic tribute. In Durazno, official public events have been suspended for both days, though municipal services and public offices will continue to operate under normal schedules.
