Uruguay democratic support declines to 64% in latest report
According to the latest Latinobarómetro report, support for democracy in Uruguay has declined to 64%, a six-point drop from previous measurements and a ten-point decrease since 2020. While Uruguay maintains the second-highest level of democratic support in Latin America, behind Argentina, the trend shows significant internal wear.
Key findings indicate a growing disconnect between citizens and institutions. Only 29% of Uruguayans feel represented by Parliament, and just 27% believe the country is moving in the right direction. Additionally, 45% of respondents stated they would accept a non-democratic government if it were able to resolve the country's problems, and 67% expressed support for “a bit of a heavy hand” from the government.
The report suggests that the decline in support may be linked to recent changes in government and a shift toward a left-wing leadership that lacks the same level of enthusiasm seen in previous administrations. Despite these trends, 80% of Uruguayans still believe that democracy, despite its flaws, remains the best system of government.
