Manuel Ugarte sidelined by knee injury as Uruguay exit World Cup
Uruguay were eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1‑0 defeat to Spain, finishing bottom of Group H with two points. During that match midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury, collapsing before halftime and being stretchered off. The Uruguayan Football Association confirmed that he sustained a ligament rupture – most likely an anterior cruciate ligament tear – and that he will be taken to England for further examinations and treatment.
Manchester United issued a statement confirming Ugarte’s ligament injury and said that medical assessments are ongoing to determine the length of his rehabilitation, which could keep him out for eight to twelve months.
