Manuel Ugarte sidelined by knee injury as Uruguay exit World Cup

Uruguay were eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1‑0 defeat to Spain, finishing bottom of Group H with two points. During that match midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury, collapsing before halftime and being stretchered off. The Uruguayan Football Association confirmed that he sustained a ligament rupture – most likely an anterior cruciate ligament tear – and that he will be taken to England for further examinations and treatment.

Manchester United issued a statement confirming Ugarte’s ligament injury and said that medical assessments are ongoing to determine the length of his rehabilitation, which could keep him out for eight to twelve months. The club’s plans for the upcoming season and the summer transfer window are expected to be affected by his prolonged absence. The AUF confirmed coordination with United on the player’s recovery and noted that the injury adds to the setbacks faced by the national team after its early tournament exit.

The World Cup campaign also highlighted internal tensions within the squad, with coach Marcelo Bielsa reportedly expressing disappointment and feeling abandoned by the players in a post‑elimination meeting.
