Uruguay faces World Cup elimination after 0-1 loss to Spain
Uruguay fell behind 0‑1 to Spain in their World Cup group match, with the only goal scored by Spain's Baena. Coach Marcelo Bielsa responded by substituting the goalkeeper after a defensive error, and made other adjustments including bringing De la Cruz on for the injured Ugarte and inserting Vinas for Valverde. Uruguay received yellow cards for Guillermo Varela and Sanabria, while Spain swapped in Olmo and Ruiz and withdrew Pedri and Merino.
The result leaves Uruguay at risk of elimination, tied on points with the Green Islands but leading on goal difference and goals scored. At the same time, the Green Islands and Saudi Arabia played out a goalless draw in the parallel group fixture.
