Uruguay General Assembly refers Cardama case to prosecutors
The Uruguayan General Assembly has concluded its parliamentary investigation into the Cardama case. The Frente Amplio party successfully passed a motion to refer the investigation's findings to the Attorney General's Office and the specialized prosecutor for economic and complex crimes.
The resolution was approved with 65 votes following the departure of two deputies from the Cabildo Abierto party. The investigation centered on the procurement of two ocean patrol vessels (OPV) for the National Navy from the Spanish shipyard Cardama, a contract that was eventually rescinded due to irregularities detected regarding guarantees.
The session was marked by political tension, as the opposition criticized the handling of the proceedings while the ruling coalition defended the methods used to conclude the debate.
