Five of the six candidates vying to replace António Guterres as United Nations Secretary‑General will gather in Montevideo on 3 August 2026. The concentration of Latin American and Caribbean candidates marks an unprecedented moment in the selection process, which traditionally follows regional rotation and requires recommendation by at least nine Security Council members without a permanent‑member veto. Analysts warn of a possible deadlock in the Security Council, noting that the first informal “straw‑vote” is scheduled for 30 July.
