Uruguay Impulsa participants seek program extension
Participants of the Uruguay Impulsa program are conducting a nationwide signature collection drive to request an extension of the initiative's duration from four to six months. The goal is to allow beneficiaries to continue working through December, providing income during the final months of the year and the traditional holiday season.
Workers from various regions, including Salto, Paysandú, Lavalleja, Florida, and Fray Bentos, argue that the current four-month term is insufficient and seek to restore the six-month period that historically characterized the program. The movement is not seeking permanent employment, but rather a two-month extension.
More than 2,500 signatures have already been submitted in Montevideo. Participants have also sent letters to the President of the Republic and notified national legislators. The request is based on Law No. 20.496, which allows for a one or two-month extension through an agreement between the Congress of Intendants and the Presidency.
