Uruguay issues prevention measures for Western Equine Encephalitis
The Uruguayan Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), through its General Directorate of Livestock Services (DGSG), has issued preventive recommendations regarding Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE). The alert comes as rising temperatures and humidity create favorable conditions for mosquito proliferation, which are the primary vectors for the viral disease.
To mitigate the risk of the virus circulating in Uruguay, the MGAP advises equine owners to implement several measures: establishing vaccination plans with veterinarians, using authorized mosquito repellents, eliminating standing water to control mosquito breeding, and managing tall vegetation.
Authorities urge owners to monitor animals for symptoms such as fever, lethargy, and neurological issues, including tremors, loss of balance, or circular movements. Any suspected cases should be reported immediately to local or zonal livestock services.
