Uruguay launches NFC mobile reader for national ID cards

Uruguay has introduced a new mobile application, Lector DNI Uy, which allows compatible smartphones to read the chip of Uruguayan identity cards using NFC technology. Developed through cooperation between Agesic and the National Directorate of Civil Identification, the tool is designed to authenticate users for digital state services.

The application functions as a reader for the physical document rather than a standalone digital copy. To use the service, users must bring their physical ID card close to an NFC-enabled device and follow an authentication process. This mechanism provides access to ID Uruguay and a wide range of state procedures requiring high security levels.

To utilize the app, citizens must possess an identity card issued after August 2022 with a valid digital certificate, know their document PIN, and have an NFC-compatible smartphone. The tool is available on iOS and Android and is expected to facilitate access to more than 80% of digital public services. The physical document remains necessary for in-person controls.
