Uruguay launches tax credit to attract audiovisual productions
The Uruguay Film and Audiovisual Agency (ACAU) has launched the ‘Tax Credit Uruguay Audiovisual,’ a fiscal incentive designed to attract international productions and bolster the local audiovisual sector. The program offers a tax credit of up to 30% of eligible expenses incurred within the country for production and post-production activities.
To qualify, companies must have spent at least 1,200,000 indexed units on eligible costs, which include technical and artistic services, filming, animation, visual effects, transportation, equipment rental, and locations. These expenses must be documented and, with few exceptions, contracted with local residents or companies. The resulting credit certificates are valid for 36 months and follow the exporter regime.
Applications are currently open for production and post-production services for both advertising and non-advertising content. Future calls will be opened for national audiovisual works and content specifically intended for television channels. The initiative aims to generate employment for local technicians, directors, and artists while creating a multiplier effect across related economic sectors.
